Bristol NARPO

Meet the Committee

Chair - Ben White

I joined Gloucestershire Cadets in 1967, then became a PC at Filton in 1969. At the time of amalgamation, I was village bobby at Charfield but in 1977 my career developed and I served most of my time thereafter in Bristol divisions. Later I went into Operational Training running PSU training and was finally on the Support Group. I retired in 1997, served on the Bristol NARPO committee for several years and was elected Chairman of the Branch in 2022.

Vice-Chair - John Vickery

I joined as a cadet and then became a PC in 1964. I began in 'A' Division and then, in 1969, was transferred to Traffic for eight years. I was promoted to Sergeant on 'C' Division and for the last fifteen years of my service was the Community/Crime Prevention Sergeant.

In 1996 I was awarded the MBE for community service.

Secretary - Pat Gates

I joined Bristol Cadets in 1967 and then went on to 'A' and 'C' Divisions as a WPC before attachments to Vice and Drugs Squad, Special Services. For 13 years I worked on Major Incidents all over the Force area. I was WDC on Drugs Unit as Chemist Officer and also specialising in Drugs Training. Since retiring I have served NARPO on the National Executive Committee for 12 years. I have been Secretary since 2003. I was awarded the BEM in 2014 for my work for NARPO and for pensioner welfare.

Treasurer - Keith Blight

I was in Somerset and Bath Constabulary from 1972-73 and then with Avon and Somerset from 1974-2004. I was a PC at Nailsea and then a PC at Bristol 'A' Division. I was then with Traffic at Almondsbury, moved to 'A' Division and Bath as a Sergeant. I worked at HQ for a while, then back to 'A' Division and then Southmead as an Inspector.

Joe Herring

Well, I joined Surrey Police on 5th March 1969 and then transferred to Gloucestershire in 1971. From there I was absorbed into the then new Avon and Somerset in 1974 and have been here ever since. I obtained the exalted rank of Detective Constable and had a jolly nice time. I worked most of the city stations at odd times and a fair few of the county ones. Now I'm happily retired.
